| | | Description | This third volume in a three-book series is devoted to academic words. Designed to serve as a supplement to any developmental text or as a stand-alone text for vocabulary enrichment courses, it offers a wealth of exercises and self-tests to enable students to work independently and also offers group activities for those instructors who wish to foster collaborative learning.
|

| New Features | Book Three focuses on academic words in the context of their field of study. Textbook excerpts representing eleven disciplines provide a full range of disciplines-from art, history, and literature to accounting, biology, and algebra. A full range of practice activities that include objective exercises, self-tests, answers keys, and open-ended writing assignments, enable students to work independently. Many exercises and activities can be done as a group for those instructors who wish to foster collaborative learning. A comprehensive Instructor's Manual provides helpful teaching suggestions, answers to all the exercises, and chapter quizzes. You'll find each chapter:
- Lays out the objectives and methodology for students in an introductory overview
- Presents a short passage (2 or 3 pages) from a textbook with a selection of words (numbered and underlined) presented for study in context
- Asks the student to summarize and apply the content of the passage in a variety of open-ended writing assignments
- Asks the students to define the selected words in their own words and to compare their definitions with definitions provided in the text
- Includes a matching test in which students match the words in column A with the definitions in column B
- Provides a sentence completion exercise requiring students to select the right words from a list to fill the blanks in a series of sentences
